Neck Pain

Neck pain is not normal, although many people do suffer from neck pain, and some people have the symptoms quite often.

Denver area Chiropractor,  Dr. Chris Butler says, "Many patients have come to me over the years looking for relief from neck pain and headaches. People get tired of taking pain pills or other medications, they understand that those pills might only hide their symptoms, but it doesn't fix the problem."

What causes neck pain?

"Often times, patients have neck pain that is caused by misalignment of structures of their spine in the neck or upper back that is causing interference with the nerves of the spine.  That nerve interference causes the nerve's signals to not get to the muscles or other structures correctly.  That can cause a variety of symptoms including neck pain,"  says Dr. Butler.  "We see that kind of neck pain often."

There are some tests you can do at home to see if your neck pain is being caused by misalignment.  Stand in front of mirror and lean your head to the left as far as it will go, keeping your face and nose straight forward, and not moving your shoulders, if it hurts or pulls then stop there, then go to the right.  If there is a difference in the range, then it might be a misalignment problem. Also, you can have someone stand in front of you to observe while you turn your face to the left and right slowly as far as it will go without pain.  If there is a difference in the range of that turning from one side compared to the other then there's a good chance that chiropractic care can help you.

Sometimes a patient's neck pain may be associated with headaches or a variety of other head, face, neck, shoulder, or even arm or hand symptoms that are being caused by the neck problem.

"Finding the source of the patient's neck pain, aches, or other symptoms is the key to beginning to correct it and get the patient permanent relief,"  states Dr. Butler.

Other Causes of neck pain can be:

  • Car accidents, recent or even long ago.
  • Sports injuries, new or old injuries.
  • Work injuries.
  • Slips, falls.
  • Childhood injuries.
  • Ergomonic problems (sitting at a desk, office work in a posture that is not working for you).
  • Stress that causes physical changes to muscles and/or structures of the spine, neck, back.
  • Chemical stresses or irritants causing changes in the nerve system.
  • Injuries to the discs of the neck or back.
  • There are also other causes of neck pain and/or headaches that are much less common.

When a patient comes to our office for the first time, we do a thorough exam to determine the specific cause of the patient's problem.  Dr. Butler will then always make sure to help the patient understand exactly what is going on with their problem and talk about best ways to relieve or fix it.  "If it's a problem that I can help, I will always to my absolute best to do that. In most cases, we can provide alot of help to address the patient's problem and resolve it.  If, as in a small number of cases, I can't help them, I will certainly let them know that, and I will make sure that they are referred for best possible treatment."

Dr. Butler has been treating patients with neck pain, headaches, back pain, and many other conditions for 15 years and has many very happy patients.  We use state of the art equipment, and outstanding gentle techniques as treatment for a variety of case types.
